This Swainson's Hawk was admitted to Teton Raptor Center after what staff believe to be a collision with a power line. As a result, the right humerus was broken. Luckily, the break looked pretty new and fresh and the bird was admitted for surgery the next morning. Veterinarians from Jackson Animal Hospital were successful in being able to pin the fracture. The bird is currently in an oxygen chamber and is on a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory pain medication, fluids and probiotics to prevent infection, decrease swelling, and keep the bird hydrated and healthy.
Once the bone has healed and if everything goes as planned, staff will begin physical therapy and eventually move on to flight training the bird in preparation for release.
