On the same day we admitted two Swainson's Hawks! This patient utilized our Raptor Rescue Network for transport to our center. X-rays showed a compound fracture in both the ulna and radius in the left wing. The next afternoon the bird underwent surgery at Jackson Animal Hospital where the ulna was pinned with a titanium pin and the radius was sutured and anchored to the ulna. Treatment going forward includes antibiotics to prevent infections and wing wrap changes along with light physical therapy 2-3 times a week.
Update: This bird is very active, feisty, and is already self feeding! At the six week point, the pin from the left Ulna was removed and the wing wrap was taken off a week later. The bird's left elbow has great extension and the wrist, which was originally stiff, has been worked out through physical therapy. Now the bird is flight training about 7 flights every other day.
