Fun Fact: The name “Rough-legged Hawk” refers to the distinctive feathers that extend all the way down this species’ legs, providing warmth in the cold northern climates they call home.
Tundra joined TRC after being cared for at the North Sky Raptor Sanctuary in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. He was admitted after being struck by a car, which left him completely blind in his left eye. Unfortunately, this injury prevented him from being released back into the wild.
Tundra’s name reflects the cold northern habitats where this species thrives. In the snowy, tundra-like ecosystems, Rough-legged Hawks hunt for small rodents like lemmings and voles.
We are thrilled to welcome Tundra to our team of Avian Ambassadors! As a representative of one of North America’s most northern-dwelling hawk species, he will help inspire conservation and appreciation for these incredible birds.
