Cricket Is A Boy!
After receiving the results of Cricket’s bloodwork, we are proud to announce that Cricket is a male! Throughout the past few weeks, the Education team has noticed Cricket exhibiting more male-like Burrowing Owl traits. One such characteristic is a thick, dark-colored neck band that is normally present in most male individuals of this species. Female Burrowing Owls will exhibit a dark color throughout their full plumage. Male Burrowing Owls also tend to spend more time outside of their burrows than females, and utilize a “hoot-hoot” call more often. This may also act as a courtship call.
Burrowing Owls are opportunistic feeders, meaning that they eat what’s available around them. For a species this size, that includes insects like grasshoppers and beetles, and occasionally small mammals. Click the button below to learn more about Cricket and Burrowing Owls!
