Kid Art Inspired by Gus the Golden Eagle

As April comes to a close—and with it, Gus’ Hatch Day month—the TRC education team is excited to share some heartwarming kid-created art inspired by Gus! These wonderful pieces were made by students from the Jackson Hole Historical Society’s spring break camp.

The K–5 campers recently read The Eagles Are Back by Jean Craighead George, a beautifully told story about the recovery of the Bald Eagle, once teetering on the edge of extinction. Thanks to passionate volunteers and years of dedicated conservation efforts, these majestic birds made an incredible comeback.

The book follows a young boy who plays a part in helping a Bald Eagle chick hatch, offering a powerful message about the impact of even small acts of care. Inspired by this story, the young artists visited Teton Raptor Center, where they had the chance to meet two of our education ambassadors—Gus the Golden Eagle and Horus the Peregrine Falcon—both of whom carry strong conservation stories of their own. The artwork they gifted us will be treasured as a lasting memory of their visit and a reminder of how meaningful connections with wildlife can spark a lifelong love for conservation. A huge thank-you to the Jackson Hole Historical Society Kids Camp for their creativity, enthusiasm, and support!

When asked about the highlight of her winter trip to Jackson Hole, young visitor Mimi from Rhode Island didn’t hesitate — meeting Gus the Golden Eagle at Teton Raptor Center topped her list. Here’s what she shared.
