Migration Season in the Big Belts
We have just wrapped up our 6th year in the Big Belt Mountains of Montana monitoring and studying Golden Eagle migrations. The location of our research site allows us to count and trap raptors that are heading south into Wyoming, so we can collect data on eagles that winter in Wyoming or pass through the state. The area is also a key migration corridor for several other raptor species. For each raptor caught, we take measurements and blood samples, and fit them with a USGS leg band. Eagles also receive a color band, which is easier to read from a distance and helps with resighting. Check out some of the highlights from this year!
