Tracking Nomadic Short-Eared Owls
In 2020, our research team began the first-ever tracking study of Short-eared Owls in Wyoming. This was the second owl captured for the study and she had a successful nest in western Wyoming. As a nomadic species, Short-eared Owls will change breeding sites between years. One owl we tagged bred in Wyoming and then in northeastern Oregon the next year! 2020 was a banner year for Short-eared Owls in Wyoming, while we have seen very few breeding owls in the past two years. Watch the animation at the link below of this adult female’s tracks as she traverses across Wyoming into Colorado and then settles in Nebraska for the winter!
